Cod Street shelter Shed

In 1939 a site for a shelter shed was selected in Cod Street due to its close proximity to the Tin Can Bay jetty and bathing enclosure. Through community and labor in a 'picnic like atmosphere' the 30ft by 18ft shed was completed by May 1940 using solid hardwood timber supplied by the Widgee Shire Council. A concrete floor was added in 1944 with etchings in the slab, indicating it was completed on the 8 December. Etching scratched in the timber were also made over time by people who frequented the shelter, leaving a memory mark for the future. Unfortunately, the timber construction fell victim to white ant infestation and the shelter shed removed in 2009

Electricity switch on

It was September 1959 when electricity was officially switched on in Tin Can Bay. The cables used for the extension from Gympie to Tin Can Bay were not copper but steel core aluminum making them lighter with greater  tensility requiring fewer posts keeping the project affordable. At a large ceremony that was held, State Treasurer Mr. T.A. Hiley extinguished a kerosene lamp to symbolize the passing of an era before the power was 'switched on.'

The catalyst: - Prawns. Local fisherman Fred Langford discovered prawns off western side of Inskip Point and the main prawning ground was located just outside of the bar. Within weeks of the news breaking, over 70 boats had arrived in the bay and the first on the scene were said to have been Tamoi, Viking and Pathfinder.
